Successful move from legacy Cisco UC toward a consolidated Webex Calling environment
Situation
A multi-site organization was running on legacy Cisco unified communications and needed a path to Webex Calling without breaking day-to-day operations. Voice is never “just another app”: dial plans, analog endpoints, emergency calling, call queues, and site-by-site cutovers all have to land cleanly or the business feels it immediately.
They needed a team that had done enterprise Cisco UC and Webex Calling migrations before — not a trial-and-error cutover.
Approach
VRTG ran the migration as an engineering project, not a software install:
- 01Inventoried existing Cisco UC usage, site dependencies, and must-keep features
- 02Designed the Webex Calling target architecture (calling, devices, and operational model)
- 03Sequenced site cutovers to reduce risk and keep support coverage clear
- 04Migrated users and workloads to Webex Calling with validation at each stage
- 05Left the client with a supportable collaboration platform instead of a brittle hybrid mess
Senior UC engineers owned design and cutover — the same people who work Cisco voice environments day to day.
Results
- Successful move from legacy Cisco UC toward a consolidated Webex Calling environment
- Multi-site calling aligned under a modern cloud collaboration platform
- Clearer path for ongoing support and feature rollout across locations
- Reduced exposure to aging on-prem voice infrastructure
Why it mattered
Voice migrations fail quietly in planning and loudly on Monday morning. The client got a partner who treats dial plans, E911, and site sequencing as first-class engineering — not checklist items.
